Facebook announced the launch of a new feature called "Today in", which will feed local news and information to users.

Initially,  this new feature is being tested in six cities - New Orleans, Louisiana; Little Rock, Arkansas; Billings, Montana; Peoria, Illinois; Olympia, Washington and Binghamton, New York. This idea is from the company's new partnership team which is managed by NBC news anchor Campbell Brown and a part of Facebook's Journalism project.

Users who will identify themselves to be living in that area will be able to view the local news. Facebook is trying hands on a machine-learning software which will surface content in Today.in. The idea behind the new feature is that users worldwide can see the local news and events from cities they don't live in.

In November, Facebook renamed its event app to Facebook Local. This app will be completely different from the new local news section.
