Serena Williams

US Open final, between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka caught a lot of heat, when Carlos Ramos, the umpire of the match made a controversial call, unfavourable towards Serena which eventually led to her being penalized for three violations with a fine of $17,000 by the US Tennis Association.

Serena first received a code violation when the umpire called out her coach for signalling her by hand actions. The second and third violations were for breaking her racket and calling the umpire a thief and claiming she is not a cheater, as she felt accused.

She also said this was a result of racism and sexism shown towards her as according to her, men have called umpires a lot of things and they get away with it because they are “men”. This thought, even if it were true is probably wrong because if men and women resort to verbal abuse “equally”, umpires’ value and dignity would go for a toss. Men and women both shouldn’t verbally abuse umpires but “men do it so I’d do it too” thought doesn’t justify her actions.

An Australian newspaper published a cartoon depicting this incident, which was found to be racist and was slammed for it.

People have taken to Twitter to show Serena support, though some say the allegations were rational.
