Weekend getaways from Mumbai for a quick winter break


Mumbai is one of the best cities for quick getaways. Located centrally, right beside the ocean and very close to the mighty Western Ghats; there’s no dearth of options for Mumbaikars. Mumbai is close to many scenic cities like Karjat, Matheran and many more! Here are some of the best weekend getaways from Mumbai:

Karjat: Karjat lies in the Ulhas valley and is beautiful and lush green during the rainy season. There are numerous trekking and historical spots that make it a popular destination for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts. The trails here are moderate and extremely difficult as well.

2)  Matheran: One of the oldest and most popular hill stations near Mumbai, Matheran is an evergreen choice for a weekend getaway. Located in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, it has been declared an Eco sensitive region by the government, which is why no automobiles are allowed inside the town! There are over 40 points to look at the sunset and sunrise in India, apart from 2 lakes and worship places as well.

3) Alibaug: Alibaug is a picturesque stretch of land located near the Arabian Sea. One of the most unique attractions of this place is a black sand beach which offers a stunning sight of the Kolaba fort. One of the best ways to reach Alibaug is to take a ferry from the beach near Gateway of India in South Mumbai.

If you’re an adventure sport enthusiast, Alibaug offers many activities such as paragliding, motor-boat ride, sky kayaking and Jet Ski.

4) Malshej Ghat: If you live in Mumbai and haven’t taken a road trip to Malshej Ghat, then you’re missing out! This is one of the most picturesque trips you can take from Maharashtra. There are many idyllic waterfalls to explore here and even some old forts. There’s a very grand fort here called the Harishchandragad fort, which has gained its popularity among trekkers. You can even explore the temples here which are architecturally stunning.

5) Panchgani: This city is perfect for nature lovers as there are many beautiful view points all across the hill station. The lush green meadows, the stunning view of the hills; nothing quite beats the spectacular beauty of Panchgani.

Panchgani got its name from the five hills surrounding the hill station, “Paanch” meaning five. Here you can enjoy serene view of the valley from from Table Land, which is a flat area of grass over a mountain and take a quick trip to Dhom Damn in Wai, at the foothills of Panchgani.

6) Mahabaleshwar: A beautiful hill town located amidst the Western Ghats, Mahabaleshwar is well known for its hills, majestic peaks and laid back hill station vibe. The perfect place to indulge in ripe red strawberries, Mahabaleshwar has some truly hidden gems. Speaking of which, take a trip to Old Mahabaleshwar to see the age old Krishnaveni temple. It is said to be over 2,000 years old! Fascinating, right?

7) Murud-Janjira: Murud-Janjira is a historical fort, located just off the village of Murud.  Famous for its beautiful beaches and ancient forts, this place is a goldmine waiting to be discovered. The hills located near Murud- Janjira have a beautiful shrine dedicated to Lord Dattatreya. Here you can explore the Ahmedganj Palace which spans across 45 acres and is a palatial mansion. You can also explore the Janjira fort, which was built in the 16th Century and is surrounded by Arabian Sea from all sides.

8) Lonavala – Nestled in the Western Ghats and surrounded by lush green valleys, Lonavala has a lot to offer. A perfect winter getaway, the place has ancient Karla caves and the Lohagad Fort. You can also enjoy the most peaceful sunset at Tiger Point. Best way to experience Lonavala is reserve a room at a luxurious resort and spend time lazing around, gazing at the serene view.
