Sylvester daCunha was the man who conceptualized the famous Amul Girl, who was introduced as a rival to the Polson butter girl.

Sylvester daCunha – The man who introduced the world to the iconic Amul girl, passed away on Tuesday night in Mumbai.

daCunha conceptualized the Amul 'Utterly Butterly' Girl along with his art director Eustace Fernandes in 1966 and saw the mascot grow into a cult favourite.

Talking to the press, daCunha’s son Rahul daCunha was quoted saying that it was his father who thought that the brand needed to let go of their boring image, and a round-eyed, chubby-cheeked, utterly butterly girl was the perfect match for it. The Amul girl was brought to the Indian market as the rival to the Polson butter girl, who would not only make her way into everyone’s homes but also into their hearts.

Industry folks took to social media to offer their condolences.

Pavan Singh, general manager-marketing at Amul India, paid his tributes by sharing his thoughts on LinkedIn and wrote, “I am sure, he will live on forever, in the minds & hearts of Advertising & marketing professionals in India.”
