Messenger introduces opt-in end-to-end encrypted chats

Addressing the growing concerns and requirements of users over private and secure messaging, Messenger has now expanded the option to keep chats end-to-end encrypted and has also introduced more features.

The updates have been designed to cater to the need for privacy and safety during online communication. The platform mentions end-to-end encryption is designed to protect users and their data from hackers, and cybercriminals. Here are updates related to end-to-end encrypted chats and new features launched by Messenger:

  • End-to-end Encrypted Group Chats and Calls: End-to-end encryption for group chats, including voice and video calls was first tested last year with a select group of users, and is now available to everyone
  • Screenshot notifications: Messenger will now be sending notifications to users whwnever a screenshot is detected on a disapperaing message. The notification was previously also sent in the vanish mode, now it would be rolled out for disappearing messages in end-to-end encrypted chats ovver the course of next few weeks
  • GIFs and Stickers: GIFs and Stickers are now available in end-to-end encrypted chats
  • Reactions: Users can double tap a message to 'heart' it and long-press to hoose a reaction from the tray of options: โค๏ธ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ˜ ๐Ÿ‘

  • Replies: Users will now als be able to reply to specific messages in your end-to-end encrypted chats, either by long pressing or swiping to reply
  • Tap and hold to reply: Long press on a message to reply to it, with a copy of the original message
  • Swipe to reply: Swipe on the message you want to reply to
  • Typing Indicators: Typing indicators are now available so users can see when others are typing
  • Message forward: Long-pressing on a message will give users the option to forward. One users tap the โ€˜forwardโ€™ button, a share sheet will be displayed so they can share with one or many people or groups. Users will also be able to create a new group before forwarding a message
  • Verified Badge: The verified badge will be available for end-to-end encrypted chats to help users identify authentic accounts and have meaningful interactions
  • Save Media: Users will be able to save a video or image by long-pressing on any media received
  • Video edits: Add stickers, scribbling or adding text, cropping, and audio editing (for videos), and edit a video before sending
