Google rolls out AI mode in Search for all users in India
Initially introduced as an experimental feature in Labs last month, the feature is now being rolled out broadly with no sign-up required, making it easier to explore complex topics and ask in-depth questions.
Google has officially launched its AI Mode in Search for all users in India, making it easier to explore complex topics and ask in-depth questions. Initially introduced as an experimental feature in Labs this June, AI Mode is now being rolled out broadly with no sign-up required.
AI Mode is Google’s most advanced AI-powered search experience. Built using a custom version of Gemini 2.5, it allows users to ask longer, more detailed questions and receive comprehensive answers enriched with helpful links. This includes support for follow-up questions, enabling deeper exploration of a topic.
The company claims that users in India have responded positively to the initial launch, praising the speed and quality of the responses. Many have used AI Mode for tasks such as learning new concepts, comparing products, planning trips, and understanding step-by-step processes.
The new mode can be accessed in three ways:
Go to google.com/aimode.
Go to www.google.com, enter a question in the Search bar, and tap AI Mode below the Search bar.
On the Google app, tap AI Mode on the home screen.
It supports queries via text, voice, and visual inputs through Google Lens. This multimodal approach is relevant in India, where both voice search and Google Lens are widely used.
For instance, users can snap a photo of a plant and ask how to care for it, or describe their children’s indoor activity needs and receive tailored suggestions. AI Mode breaks down queries into subtopics using a method called query fan-out, enabling it to fetch results from across the web.
AI Mode is said to merge its latest AI capabilities with its existing information systems, including real-time data from the Knowledge Graph and shopping platforms. This aims to ensure accurate, relevant, and updated results.
The company highlights that AI Mode is built on its core quality and ranking systems. While the goal is to provide AI-generated responses, users may still see standard search results when the system has low confidence in its answer.
This rollout is part of the company’s broader vision to evolve Search into a more intuitive, AI-driven experience.
