Threads rolls out voice and time-limited content filters in hidden words update

Meta’s Threads platform has introduced an expanded set of ‘Hidden Words’ tools, allowing users greater control over the content they see. The new update includes the ability to block offensive content and filter specific words, phrases, or emojis, with the option to set custom filters for up to 30 days.

This builds on the feature first introduced in April and reflects Threads’ ongoing efforts to evolve independently from Instagram. Users can now tailor their Threads experience more precisely, without relying on Instagram settings or account preferences.

Threads chief Adam Mosseri noted that the update supports the platform’s aim to foster open and comfortable discussions, with enhanced user moderation options forming part of that goal. The temporary filter function is designed to help users avoid unwanted topics, such as spoilers or trending discussions, for a defined period.

The move signals a broader shift for Threads, which is gradually introducing platform-specific settings and controls. This follows earlier changes, including the removal of follow recommendations based on Instagram activity and tests to allow new users to sign up without an Instagram account.

With a reported user base of 350 million, Meta appears to be positioning Threads to stand as an independent platform, developing its own engagement metrics and user experience—separate from Instagram’s influence.
