The categories For You, Following, Popular and Continue Watching have been removed for one feed recommending videos.
The horizontal scrolling design has also been discarded, the new design is a vertical layout of recommended clips.
Since it’s inception last year, IGTV has failed to take off with the users. Less than half of Instagram’s users have downloaded the app.
Instagram has been making several attempts to make it relevant to the users from letting users share share IGTV videos on Stories, to showing IGTV previews on main feed and explore tab, till contemplating making it available for advertisers.
Recently, Instagram also added an IGTV tab on the revamped Explore section. Commenting on this, Will Ruben, Product Lead, Instagram stated to TechCrunch, “The idea is this is more immersive and helps you to see the breadth of videos in IGTV rather than the horizontal scrolling interface that used to exist.”
This update is another attempt to make it relevant. There are claims that the new update is similar to TikTok’s vertical one video at-a-time feed and Snapchat Discover’s infinity grid.
