Instagram will be asking for users' date of birth now when creating an account and is providing control over direct messages.

Instagram Age Verification

Birthdays obtained from Instagram Age Verification will not be publicly visible on Instagram, but users can view it in their private account information.

If you've connected your Facebook account to your Instagram account, we will add the date of birth that’s on your Facebook profile. Editing your date of birth on Facebook will also change it on Instagram.

If you don’t have a Facebook account or if you have not connected your accounts, you can add or edit your birthday directly on Instagram.

Users must be at least 13 years old to have an account in most countries, as the content circulating on the platform is age-appropriate, so the platform is about ten years late to add the feature.

Instagram will also use the information provided for age verification to create tailored experiences.

Private Messaging

Instagram is providing an option that lets users the ability to only allow people they follow to message and add them to group threads.

Users who enable this setting will no longer receive messages, group message requests or story replies from anyone they have not followed.
