With her food blog on Instagram, Gurleen Bedi hopes to take each challenge as it comes, enjoy the journey and see where it takes her.

An important part of being a blogger is about research. It is important for them to be up-to-date with the latest food trends. Some of them are pretty crazy, feel Gurleen Bedi. She tries to stick to content she loves on a personal level. When it comes to recipe videos, an important parameter is to ensure that it's simple. The audience should feel the urge to try it out. She tells us more about her content creation process.

Looking back, where did it all begin?

It all started in 2017 when I used to put up a lot of food pictures on my Snapchat Stories with the caption “What is life?” One day I asked a friend to come along to try out the “Pull apart cheesy garlic bread” and she asked, “Is this for your Snapchat What is Life series?” This got me thinking that this could be an actual thing. I mean, I love food, I love exploring new places and surely love clicking pictures. Why not start a food blog? That night itself, the journey of whaaatislife started.

What's in the name?

The name “whaaatislife” is super close to my heart. For me, food equals happiness. Everyone has their dull days and sad moments; it’s a part of life. However, a cheesy pizza or piping hot butter chicken surely do lift up my mood a little. Hence, whaaatislife i.e. what is life without food?

What is your USP in this cluttered space? How does your content give you an edge?

My feed has something for everyone. I’m the kind of person who likes street food as much as restaurant/café food as much as cooking food! So be it simple recipe videos, cheap street food or some fancy restaurant food, you’ll find it all there.

Please take us through your content creation process. How do you stay relevant and relatable?

Being a food blogger, you have to be up-to-date with the latest food trends going around. To be honest, some of them are just crazy. I put up content that I personally love. Also, when I put of recipe videos I make sure it is something tasty yet simple so that my audience can actually try it out.

How do you make moolah with your efforts?

It’s through brand collaborations and advertisements.

How do you maintain editorial objectivity with the influx of brand briefs?

It can be a little difficult sometimes. You just have to talk it through with the brand to reach a middle ground.

Weirdest brand brief/request ever

Some brands are just not ready to pay at all. They say weird stuff like: "But we will give you goodies in return." They need to act more professionally.

If not blogging, you would be?

I don’t know. Blogging has become such a major part of my life that I can’t think of my life without it!

A day in your life...

I wake up, go to work. I usually get free in the afternoon and then I try to work on my page by going out and creating new content. When I’m not creating content, I’m mostly watching Netflix or probably trying out a new recipe myself before actually shooting it. At night, I edit my pictures and videos, write captions and keep everything ready to be posted the next day.

Message/tips for upcoming bloggers

Do what you like, showcase your personal favourites. Don’t be scared of trying anything different and please don’t repost content.

The Future you foresee for your Personal Brand

I just want to improve my Instagram feed and take each challenge as it comes and see where it takes me. For me, it’s more about enjoying the blogging journey than the final destination.
