Social Media Platform Feature: Symp - A Non-Social Network

About the Platform

Symp is the first non-social network built around hashtags. Symp enables users to connect with others based on their interests and engage in meaningful discussions around the things they really care about.

Whom do we cater to?

People who don’t want to share their private lives on classic social networks, but instead want to be part of a topic-based network.

What do we offer to our consumers?

We allow users to create their own personal feed to keep up-to-date with the topics they are interested in. They don’t have to share any private information and don’t need a huge network of friends to share their thoughts and get heard.

What motivated us to start up?

We love discussions on the web and were frustrated with the status quo. Social networks like Facebook or Twitter don’t encourage meaningful discussions, so we’ve been using message boards and blog comments to find interesting content, until we realized that we need a centralized solution. Thus Symp was born.

What's in a name?

Symp stems from symposium, as we want to be a platform for all interest groups to connect with like-minded people.

How do we see Social Media?

Social Media has become merely a tool for self-promotion. Currently it shifts the user experience from what’s important to a constant stream of unfocused information.

Currently we are...

After testing the concept in public during our initial development stage, we now are invite only. Early adopters are very innovative and helpful when it comes to the further development of Symp.

Our biggest challenge was

Building a fully bootstrapped startup from the ground up. Especially in our early days we don’t want investors to have a word on where development should be going. We have our vision, the only ones who should interact with it are our users.

We want to dominate the world by

It shouldn’t be a platform, corporation or institution that dominates the world. It should be a great thought.

We’re making moolah by

We want to keep Symp free for everyone, so we will of course include ads in our network, but we will also set the focus on b2b solutions in the future. Working with usernames makes this easy, while advertisers will know how old you are, they will never know your real name.

Our What The **** Moment

The most thrilling moment was actually not long ago. While we were researching how to avoid leaks of userdata, we found out that the recent celebrity leakage started on 4chan. Browsing several channels of this board, we actually found a thread asking for Symp invites. Something we would have never expected in that early stage.

Industry as we foresee

India is an economically powerful nation and has the second largest population in the world. The Indian market is growing rapidly and will be among the most important markets for many branches within the next decades. Right now the Indian startup market is still in an early stage, but for sure we will see more and more globally successful Internet platforms made in India.

Lastly, Are you hiring?

We are currently not hiring.
